The business people choose.
The businesses of the future will be the ones people choose — a purpose they choose to give their days to, and a place that gives more back than it takes.
"You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete."
Commonly attributed to Buckminster Fuller
Generative is New Creation.
Generative · adjective
A business designed to give more than it takes — compounding value, trust, and flourishing for employees, customers, communities, and owners.
"Sustainable" was a real step forward — do no harm, leave the world no worse. But sustain only means keep going. A generative business isn't neutral: it leaves people and place more alive than it found them.
Sustainable asks, "how do we do less harm?"
Generative asks, "how much more life can we create?"
The same shift, in one line
Generative business meets the needs of the present while expanding the capacity of future generations to create their own.
This isn't a prediction. It's already happening — in the numbers companies try not to look at.
of employees worldwide are engaged at work. Most people are giving their days to something they did not choose. Gallup, 2026
of employees are "quiet quitting" — doing the bare minimum, uninspired by the work they give their days to. Gallup, 2024
of workers admit to quietly undermining their company's AI plans, most often out of fear. Writer / Workplace Intelligence, 2026
Purpose is what people want from work — and four in five aren't getting it. When a company treats its people as a cost to cut, the people stop choosing it back. That gap is the opening. A business built to be chosen walks right through it.
When knowledge was scarce, companies could buy it and rent people's hours. AI is making knowledge cheap. What stays scarce is people who care — and they get to choose where their attention goes. Attention IS Creation, so wherever they choose to go is what gets built.
We'll know it's working when talented people come looking: when the best in their field ask how to join one of these companies, and when an owner would rather pass what they built to people who'll keep it good than sell to the highest bidder. The old system doesn't need to be defeated. It needs to be out-chosen.
Same market, same tools, same AI. The difference is what the company runs on.

Generative Business is the business people choose.
It's an open category — no one owns it, and any company can become one. If yours already gives more than it takes, you're already building one. Put a name to it, hold yourself to it, and become one of the places the future comes looking for.
